African banker awards introduces new category to recognize Islamic finance

The African Banker Awards Committee has introduced a new category this year to recognize Islamic finance in order to stay in line with the event's continuous goal to recognize and celebrate the diversity of the African banking sector. The category, titled 'Best Islamic Finance Initiative' will go to the financial institution that has excelled in Islamic finance, in compliance to Shariah regulations and succeeded in providing ethical, reliable and affordable Islamic financial services. Sukuk (Islamic bonds), Takaful (Islamic insurance), Islamic project finance deals, Islamic commercial banking, and Islamic business banking are included in the list of eligible initiatives.
Omar Ben Yedder, Publisher of African Banker magazine, stated: "Islamic finance is growing in Africa and it is essential to acknowledge the contribution of this sector to the African banking industry. The African Banker Awards is thus proud to grant Islamic finance the role and recognition it truly deserves. One of the main goals of this event is to show and promote the diversity and dynamism of the African banking sector and Islamic finance represents a thriving part of it.”
Now in its 7th edition, the African Banker Awards, with the African Development Bank as the Official Patron, is a landmark annual event organized by African Banker magazine and IC Events in partnership with Business in Africa Events. It brings together over 500 key industry players and top government officials from Africa and around the world to honour the achievements of companies and individuals who have contributed significantly to the reform, modernization and expansion of the continent's banking and financial system, driving Africa's sustained economic growth in the process.
MasterCard is the Platinum sponsor for this year's African Banker Awards. Other sponsors include Banque Atlantique (Groupe Banque Centrale Populaire), Bank of Industry, Coris Bank, BGFI, First Bank, Ecobank Nedbank Alliance, and the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector.
Banks and other financial institutions can submit entries until Monday 25th March. This Awards ceremony will take place on the 29th May 2013 at Taj Palace Marrakech in Morocco, during the annual meetings of the African Development Bank.
