Pledges to Defend the Values, Interests and Territory of Nigeria…

The Nigerian Army (NA), has appointed Major General Obinna Onubogu, as the 46th General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, NA.

 

The appointment necessitated a handing and taking over ceremony between the outgone and new General Officers Commanding, at the Division’s Headquarters in Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan, on 13 March, 2024.

 

This is contained in a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel, Polycarp Okoye, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 2 Division Nigerian Army.

 

According to the statement, the new GOC, Major General Obinna Onubogu, who took over command from his predecessor, Major General Bamidele Alabi, expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja NAM, for entrusting him with the stewardship of commanding 2 Division of

He affirmed his continuous loyalty to the COAS and the nation, as he resumes military duties in his new appointment.

 

“This is yet another opportunity for me to defend the values, interests and territory of Nigeria under the great constitution and under the COAS’ direction and guidance. I want to pledge that nothing will be spared to ensure that our Area of Responsibility (AOR) remains secure and that citizens have renewed hope in the capacity and capability of the NA.”

 

 

General Onubogu, said that the Division will do all that is required to sustain the commendable efforts of his predecessor, to adequately protect and secure its AOR.

 

To this end, he urged commanders and staff officers of 2 Division, to focus all efforts towards achieving the objectives of the COAS’ command philosophy. He stressed on the imperative to improve operations, sustain capabilities, training, administration and troops welfare.

The GOC, also promised to continue to support the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and other security agencies, to ensure a more secure internal environment within 2 Division AOR.

 

He further charged all officers and soldiers of the Division, to remain focused and committed to the act of defending the nation against external aggressions and other security challenges.

 

Earlier in his farewell address, the former GOC, Major General Bamidele Alabi, thanked the Almighty God, for the grace given him to command 2 Division; while appreciating the COAS for giving him the opportunity to command 1 and 2 Divisions, which are amongst the topmost Divisions of the NA.

 

“It is indeed a rare privilege to command these historic Divisions. I am highly honoured, privileged and appreciative of the opportunity. I must say, that my command as GOC, has exposed me to the opportunity to learn more.

 

It has also enhanced my experience and made me a better officer. My tour of duty in 2 Division, has completed my experience of all the geopolitical zones of Nigeria.”

 

Speaking further, General Alabi, stated that 2 Division has been noted for success, which is evident in its stable and secure environment. He said he was happy leaving the AOR as peaceful and stable as he met it.

 

“All attempts at criminal incursion, banditry, persistent kidnapping and other security issues have been contained and well responded to; and a lot is being done to entirely curtail kidnapping and all forms of crime in the AOR”, he said.

 

He appreciated the relentless efforts and immense contributions of the Division’s Commanders at all levels, administrative elements including the Chief of Staff (COS) and staff officers as well as the entire troops of the Division.

 

“You have all done remarkably well. Your commitment to duty is topnotch. With your tremendous support, we have achieved our mission and I appreciate the support you have all given me to succeed. My sincere prayer is that God will grant you all success in your chosen career”.

He further charged all officers, soldiers and personnel of 2 Division, to remain resolute in the discharge of their constitutional roles, in line with the COAS’ command philosophy.

 

“Once again, I appreciate the priceless support you have all given me to succeed. I urge you to give same to my successor and even more. Major General Onubogu is my friend, course mate and confidant. He is an intelligent officer. Very detailed and thorough, with vast experience in the military profession, which is evident in his demonstration of competence across all the theatres the NA has engaged in our time. I have no doubt that you will all enjoy working with him.”

Highpoints of the event, were, signing of the handing over notes, decoration of the new GOC with 2 Division insignia, presentation of quarter guard and hoisting of the new GOC’c command flag.
