Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, has confirmed that six people lost their lives in a series of fatal accidents that occurred between October 29 and 30 along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, near Kara Bridge.
According to the FRSC Lagos Sector Public Education Officer, SRC Oluwadamilola Jayeola, the crashes, which happened at different times, involved multiple trucks and caused heavy traffic congestion in the area.
> “The first crash took place on Oct. 29 around 8:00 p.m. and involved two white DAF trucks (Reg Nos. GGE 24 YJ and SBG 192 XB) with seven male occupants. Fortunately, no deaths or injuries were recorded,” Jayeola said.
She explained that speeding and loss of control were the likely causes of the initial collision. The wreckage, she added, was promptly cleared by FRSC personnel with support from the Ojodu-Abiodun Police Division to ease the gridlock.
The second accident occurred later that same night at about 9:40 p.m., involving two unidentified DAF trucks carrying six male passengers.
> “Two persons sustained injuries, while four others died on the spot,” Jayeola confirmed.
The injured were rushed to AZ Hospital, Magboro, and the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre, Ojota. A joint rescue team comprising the FRSC, Nigeria Police, and Lagos State Fire Service handled the emergency response.
At 10:15 p.m., another lone crash occurred, this time involving a yellow truck. Three men were onboard; one was killed instantly. The FRSC attributed the incident to reckless overtaking and loss of control. The victim’s body was taken to a mortuary by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Health.
The fourth crash was reported early Thursday morning, around 5:20 a.m., involving a blue tow truck and another truck that plunged into the Isheri River. Out of five male occupants, two were injured, while one or more fatalities were feared as recovery operations continued.
> “Efforts are ongoing as FRSC, the Nigeria Police, and Lagos State emergency services work to retrieve the submerged truck and clear the area for normal traffic flow,” Jayeola added.
She stressed that the series of crashes within a short period around Kara Bridge highlights the grave dangers of excessive speeding and poor driving judgment.
The Lagos Sector Commander, Kehinde Hamzat, urged motorists—especially truck drivers and fleet operators—to strictly observe traffic regulations.
> “Always drive within speed limits and stay alert behind the wheel,” Hamzat advised.
“Avoid overspeeding, distractions, and unnecessary night journeys. Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy before hitting the road.”
