Kaduna State in Northwest Nigeria is notorious for banditry and kidnapping activities
A diarrhea outbreak has affected 81 students at the Government Girls Senior and Junior Secondary School, Kawo, in Kaduna State, with 15 students hospitalized.
The Kaduna State Ministry of Health confirmed the outbreak and revealed that the affected students were between 16 and 17 years old.
According to Dr. Jeremiah Diako, State Epidemiologist, “All hospitalised students have since been discharged.”
The State Rapid Response Team, led by Diako, investigated the outbreak and took immediate action to transfer the affected students to General Hospital, Kawo, for treatment.
To prevent future occurrences, the State Ministry of Health recommended strengthening disease reporting mechanisms, establishing school-based surveillance systems, standardizing case referral procedures, providing food safety and waste management training, and improving local outbreak preparedness.
“The urgent need to implement these measures to protect students’ health and prevent similar incidents in the future cannot be overemphasized,” the ministry emphasized.
With the outbreak under control, efforts are now focused on preventing future incidents and ensuring the health and safety of students in Kaduna State.
