A chieftain of the national opposition coalition group, the All-Democratic Alliance (ADA), Dr. Umar Ardo, has described as encouraging the “positive reaction” displayed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), since the group submitted its application for registration as a political party.
The new political association, being spearheaded by notable opposition politician led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai and; former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, among others, formally applied to the Commission on June 21, 2025 for political party registration, through a letter dated June 19, 2025
Protem National Chairman of ADA, Chief Akin A. Ricketts, and the Protem National Secretary, Abdullahi Musa Elayo, signed the letter applying for registration as a political party ahead of the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, Dr. Ardo, noted that within five days of the submission, “the Commission came out with clear statements indicating its impartiality and readiness to do the right thing, and published all associations that applied.”
“And within a week, we got acknowledgment letter to our application and assurance that it is being processed.,” he added.
According to Dr. Ardo, who is also the convener of League of Northern Democrats (LND), “with this reaction, the success or failure of our application now rests solely on the coalition group.”
“All we need to be registered in the shortest possible time are two things – comply in full with the requirements of the law and, by our membership, demonstrate to INEC and to Nigerians that we are indeed capable of forming a political party that can we win all elections in the country,” he said.
He however stressed that the possibility of achieving that objective depended on one thing: “if the coalition group remains united.”
