
University of Jos (UNIJOS) has inducted 150 newly qualified medical laboratory scientists into the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), significantly strengthening the country’s healthcare workforce amid rising demand for diagnostic and clinical expertise.
The induction ceremony, held under the School of Medical Sciences, marked the 10th oath-taking event for the Department of Medical Laboratory Science.
The newly inducted professionals are expected to play pivotal roles in improving diagnostic accuracy, disease surveillance, and quality healthcare delivery across the country.
Representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ishaya Tanko, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Joash Amupitan, congratulated the graduates for their resilience, discipline, and hard work throughout their training years. He noted that their successful induction was not only a personal achievement but a national asset, given the critical role of laboratory scientists in healthcare systems.
“You are stepping into a profession that is fundamental to healthcare delivery. Diagnosis, treatment planning, and disease prevention all rely heavily on the quality of laboratory results,” Prof. Amupitan stated.
He further urged the new professionals to uphold the values of integrity, compassion, and excellence as ambassadors of the university.
Delivering the keynote lecture titled “ Pursuing Excellence with Integrity: An Essential Requirement for a Truly Successful Career,” Professor Godwin Imade emphasized the importance of intentionality, value-driven decisions, and professional satisfaction. He advised the inductees to prioritize ethical standards, quality control, and teamwork as they launch into the competitive medical space, whether in Nigeria or abroad.
“Humility and teachability are non-negotiable virtues. Professional rivalry has no place in your journey. Collaborate, grow, and uphold global best practices,” he said.
Also speaking, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Jeremiah Madaki, acknowledged the institution’s commitment to global standards of training. He stated that the College continues to produce competent graduates across Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science, and Nursing, who are adequately equipped to meet both national and international healthcare demands.
“This institution has invested in building professionals that will not only thrive locally but also stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their peers globally,” Prof. Madaki remarked.
Speaking on behalf of the inductees, MLS Bukata Andrew expressed gratitude to the University, staff, and regulatory bodies for guiding them through a rigorous but rewarding academic journey. He pledged that the new graduates would uphold the values instilled in them and serve diligently wherever they are deployed.
Highlights of the event included the oath-taking ceremony, presentation of induction certificates, and awards to outstanding students for academic excellence and leadership.
The induction adds to the University of Jos’ growing record of producing high-quality healthcare professionals, contributing to efforts in addressing Nigeria’s healthcare workforce gap.
