Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced plans to resume the Abuja–Kaduna passenger train service next week, following weeks of suspension due to a track incident.
In a statement issued on Saturday from Lagos, the NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Mr. Callistus Unyimadu, confirmed the development, citing the completion of major repairs and safety inspections on the damaged rail segment at Asham.
“The service was temporarily suspended after the unfortunate incident of August 26,” Unyimadu noted.
“Since then, the corporation has worked tirelessly to ensure both the infrastructure and rolling stock are restored to the highest safety standards in line with global best practices.”
Unyimadu also disclosed that passenger refunds have been ongoing, with 512 out of the 583 affected travelers already reimbursed.
He assured that efforts were underway to process refunds for the remaining passengers.
“As part of our commitment to passenger welfare, the NRC had refunded 512 passengers out of the 583 on board the affected train,” he stated.
“Efforts are ongoing to reach and process refunds for the remaining passengers to ensure that no one is left behind.”
Appreciating stakeholders for their support during the service disruption, the NRC spokesperson said, “The NRC appreciates the patience and understanding of its esteemed passengers and assures the public that their safety, comfort, and satisfaction remain our top priority.
“We also acknowledge the invaluable support of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, security agencies, the media, and all stakeholders during this period of recovery.”
While an exact restart date has not yet been released, Unyimadu noted that full details on the resumption schedule will be made available in the coming days.
