Harry Maguire has restated his belief in his own ability, insisting he still sees himself among the top defenders in the game despite the ongoing debate around his form.
Speaking to BBC, the Manchester United centre-back was straightforward when asked about his standing in football.
“I still believe, even at my age, I’m arguably one of the best defenders in the world in both boxes,” he said.
Maguire at 32 still looks in good shape, and he continues to rely heavily on his aerial strength and physical presence, two parts of his game that have never really been in doubt.
His time at Manchester United has been mixed in recent seasons, with spells out of the starting XI and regular questions around consistency.
Even so, he has remained useful in key moments, especially in defending set pieces and contributing at the other end when needed.
Competition for places at Manchester United has stayed high, and Maguire is no longer guaranteed a start every week, but he still backs himself to deliver when called upon.
Away from club football, he is still pushing to stay in the frame for the England national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His new contract at Manchester United also reflects that the club still sees value in him, keeping him in their plans as they look to stay competitive in the Premier League and push for European success.
For now, Maguire’s position is familiar. Belief in his own game on one side and a constant argument around it on the other.
