A road crash at the Saapade Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State has claimed the lives of 10 people, while six others sustained injuries.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the collision involved a white Sinotruk truck with an unknown registration number and a white Toyota Hiace bus marked EKY 290 YM.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the command, Afolabi Odunsin, 18 people were involved in the accident, including 15 adult males, two adult females, and one male child.
“Sadly, 10 persons lost their lives, comprising 9 adult males and 1 male child, while 6 persons (4 adult males and 2 adult females) sustained varying degrees of injuries. Two adult males escaped unhurt,” he said.
“The truck driver reportedly reversed on the highway after missing his direction, while the approaching bus, travelling at high speed, attempted to navigate through the limited space available and rammed into the truck,” Odunsin added while explaining the preliminary findings.
“FRSC rescue operatives arrived promptly at the scene and evacuated the injured victims to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical treatment, while the deceased were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara,” the statement said, adding that officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Ishara Division, have taken custody of the vehicles.
The Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathised with the bereaved families, wished the injured a quick recovery, and urged motorists to avoid reversing on highways, speeding, and other dangerous driving habits.
The Ogun FRSC also reminded road users to obey traffic regulations, maintain safe speeds, and use designated turning points whenever they miss their routes to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
