
Crime suspect in police handcuff
Benue State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of Professor Gabriel Nyityo, a lecturer at Father Adasu University, Makurdi, and his younger brother, as the university community and residents continue to mourn the tragic incident.
The suspect, identified as Abdullahi Usman, is from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. His arrest follows ongoing investigations into the attack that claimed the lives of the university don and his sibling.
Confirming the development in a statement issued in Makurdi on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Udeme Edet, said officers attached to the D Division responded to a distress call along the Adaka axis, where the victims were found.
According to the statement, “the D. Division received a distress call along Adaka Axis, and on arrival they saw two dead bodies.”
The police further stated that “one Prof. Gabriel Saawua Nyityo, ‘m’ 58 years, and his younger brother, one Iorngee John Nyityo ‘m’ 19 years, were killed by unknown gunmen.”
DSP Edet said investigations are still ongoing, adding that security operatives are working to apprehend other suspects believed to have fled after the attack.
The statement noted that the command has intensified efforts to track down those still at large.
Before his death, Professor Nyityo was a lecturer in the Department of History at Father Adasu University, Makurdi. He was reportedly attacked and killed alongside his younger brother at his residence along Naka Road in Makurdi in the early hours of Wednesday.
The motive behind the assassination had yet to be established as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, members of the university community, residents and other mourners have continued to demand justice, urging security agencies to ensure that everyone involved in the killings is arrested and prosecuted.
