Borno State Government has received national recognition for its sustained humanitarian interventions and commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable women, children and families across the state.
The recognition was presented to Borno State at the 26th Regular National Council on Women Affairs, Child Advancement and Social Development, held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Jalingo, Taraba State.
The council, organised by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with the Taraba State Government, brought together Commissioners for Women Affairs from across the country, senior government officials, policymakers, development partners, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to deliberate on issues relating to women, children, family welfare and social development.
Receiving the recognition on behalf of the Borno State Government, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Zuwaira Gambo, described the honour as an important acknowledgement of the collective efforts of the state government and its partners in responding to the needs of vulnerable citizens.
The recognition highlights the continued humanitarian efforts of the Borno State Government under the leadership of Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, particularly interventions aimed at supporting vulnerable families, protecting women and children, strengthening communities and improving the wellbeing of citizens affected by humanitarian challenges.
Presenting the recognition, the Federal Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, commended the Borno State Government for its commitment to humanitarian intervention and social development.
The Minister emphasised the importance of sustained government intervention in protecting vulnerable groups and strengthening families, noting that effective social protection and humanitarian support remain critical to inclusive national development.
In her remarks after receiving the recognition, Hon. Zuwaira Gambo expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development for acknowledging Borno State’s efforts.
She said the honour would serve as an encouragement to the Borno State Government to further strengthen its interventions and expand support for vulnerable women, children and families across the state.
According to the Commissioner, humanitarian intervention remains a major priority of the administration because of the challenges that communities in Borno have experienced over the years.
She noted that women and children are often among the most affected during humanitarian crises and therefore require sustained protection, care and support.
Hon. Zuwaira Gambo stressed that the recognition was not only for the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development but for the entire Borno State Government, humanitarian workers, development partners, community leaders and the people of Borno State whose resilience and collective efforts continue to contribute to the recovery and rebuilding of communities.
She particularly acknowledged the leadership and support of Governor Zulum, whose administration, she said, has continued to place the welfare of vulnerable citizens among its priorities.
She said the ministry would continue to collaborate with relevant government institutions, development partners, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and community stakeholders to ensure that interventions reach those who need them most.
“This recognition is for the Government and people of Borno State, especially our resilient women, children and vulnerable families. It is also a recognition of the dedication of our humanitarian workers, partners and everyone contributing to the recovery and rebuilding of our communities,” she said.
The Commissioner dedicated the recognition to the people of Borno State and appreciated the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development for recognising the state’s efforts.
The Borno State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and other relevant institutions, has continued to implement interventions aimed at supporting vulnerable groups, strengthening social welfare systems and promoting community resilience.
A keynote address was delivered by Prof. Nana Tanko of the African Policy Research Institute (APRI) on strengthening families and advancing the care economy for inclusive development and the operationalisation of Nigeria’s renewed social protection architecture.
The formal opening of the council was performed by the Governor of Taraba State, His Excellency Dr. Agbu Kefas, who welcomed delegates and highlighted the importance of collective action in advancing women’s rights, child development, family welfare and social protection.
