The Borno State Flood Disaster Relief Distribution Committee on Monday convened a meeting with various international and national non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to enhance support for victims of the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri.
Participating organizations included the Danish Refugees Council (DRC), CARE Nigeria, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), ZOA Nigeria, and Inter Community Development Social Organisation (IDS).
The meeting, chaired by Honourable Abba Kyari Abba Kolo, the representative for Jere state constituency, focused on strategies to deliver aid to affected communities.
A representative from CARE Nigeria reported that the organization has secured funding to assist 6,000 households with food and non-food items across five communities in Jere and the Maiduguri Metropolitan area, specifically Fariya, Madinatu, Shuwari Garki, Abbaganaram, and Gonidamgari.
Honourable Kolo and the Chairperson Jere local government, Honourable Inna Galadima proposed relocating a designated support site to Kasuwan Dare and Ajari, which were significantly impacted by the flooding.
Relatedly, the DRC aims to target 3,000 households with cash assistance of 100,000 naira per household in Gubio and Bakasi camps, pending Committee approval.
The organization also plans to provide psychosocial support, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services, and hygiene kits, along with shelter rehabilitation in host communities.
Additionally, ZOA Nigeria announced plans to reach 2,600 households with cash assistance of 100,000 naira each, in addition to supplying cooked meals to 13,000 individuals daily.
CRS revealed plans to expand its livelihood support program to seven additional communities in MMC and Jere, with the Committee requesting coordination with the Agency for the Coordination of Humanitarian Activities.
Similarly, IDS plans to assist 1,444 households with food rations, providing each household with 25 kg of rice, 5 liters of cooking oil, 10 kg of beans, and 1 kg of salt.
Executive Secretary of the Agency for the Coordination of Humanitarian Activities, Dr Mamman Gadai and OCHA representative Ballama Mustapha urged the Committee to expedite the verification process to facilitate quick interventions, as funding is time bound.
The meeting concluded with a unanimous agreement that the Committee would propose specific communities for the planned interventions.
