Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to strengthening troop welfare through strategic partnerships with the private sector.
Speaking on Thursday at the Army Headquarters in Abuja while receiving a delegation from GTBank led by its Executive Director, Ahmed Liman, the COAS described the bank as a reliable partner whose financial services have supported the Army’s transformation efforts.
Lieutenant General Shaibu said the Federal Government’s approval for increased recruitment and the ongoing expansion of the Nigerian Army require a modern banking system capable of providing seamless financial services to personnel across formations nationwide.
He noted that GTBank’s strength in digital banking would help improve financial service delivery and support the Army’s operational readiness.
As part of the Nigerian Army’s Soldier First welfare initiative, the COAS urged the bank to expand its corporate social responsibility programmes to support wounded soldiers, widows and orphans of fallen personnel.
He also appealed for the installation of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in newly established and remote military barracks to improve access to banking services, reduce unnecessary troop movement and make it easier for personnel to carry out their duties.
Earlier, GTBank Executive Director Ahmed Liman commended the Nigerian Army for its role in defending the country’s territorial integrity and protecting lives and property.
He reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Army through financial solutions tailored to its operational and administrative needs while remaining compliant with the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy.
Liman said the bank offers specialised services for government institutions, including dedicated trade desks for processing Letters of Credit for defence procurement, secure digital platforms for salary administration and contractor payments, as well as institutional funds management services.
He also highlighted GTBank’s military-focused products, including the GT Patriot Account, which offers waived banking charges and concessionary loan rates for military personnel, alongside pension management services designed to strengthen the long-term financial security of Nigerian Army personnel.
The visit underscored the Army’s drive to deepen collaboration with key private sector partners in support of personnel welfare and operational effectiveness.
