Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has stirred controversy after declaring that he would seek the intervention of United States President Donald Trump if he believes the forthcoming Osun State governorship election is compromised.
The award-winning singer made the remarks during a livestream with content creator Carter Efe, where he spoke about his political ambitions and expressed concerns over Nigeria’s electoral process.
Davido said he has the popularity and public support to win any election conducted in a transparent manner but argued that the country’s electoral system lacks credibility.
“Until there’s transparency, then I can go ahead with politics because nobody can beat me in any election. If there’s a free and fair election, let everybody come out to vote, I will win. But because of the system, there’s no transparency; they write the results.”
Turning his attention to the forthcoming governorship election in his home state of Osun, the singer said he is closely monitoring developments and is eager to see how the exercise will be conducted.
“I want to see what they are going to do in Osun. We are waiting.”
Davido further declared that if he is dissatisfied with the outcome or conduct of the election, he would escalate the matter by drawing international attention to it, including reaching out to President Trump.
“I’ll tag Trump, I’ll call Trump, everybody. If they still don’t see anything, I’ll go in front of the White House and say, ‘Help us.’ They think it’s a joke.
“Trump will just say, ‘I think there’s a Nigerian artiste sending me a message. Don’t worry, my message will be delivered.’”
He ended his remarks with a passionate appeal directed at those involved in the electoral process.
“Leave Osun alone oo, Leave it.”
Davido’s comments have since generated reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating both his criticism of the electoral system and his suggestion of seeking international attention over the outcome of the Osun governorship election.
