Nigerian music star Davido has appealed to United States President Donald Trump and the international community to closely monitor the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State amid concerns over possible violence.
The award-winning singer made the appeal in a post shared on his official X account on Tuesday, where he expressed fears about rising political tension ahead of the poll.
Addressing the US President directly, Davido wrote:
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election.”
He said there were increasing concerns about the possibility of violence, intimidation and disruption of the electoral process, stressing that residents of Osun State should be allowed to exercise their democratic rights without fear.
“There are growing concerns about tension and the possibility of violence, intimidation, or disruption of the democratic process. Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear.”
Davido further called on the United States and other members of the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage relevant authorities to protect voters and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected.”
The singer concluded his message with a call for peace, transparency and credible elections, saying the people of Osun do not want violence.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election.”
Davido tagged President Trump’s official X handle, @realDonaldTrump, in the post.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, with political parties intensifying their campaigns ahead of the vote. There have been reported cases of pre-election violence which have led to the death of party supporters. However, security agencies and electoral authorities have repeatedly assured residents of their commitment to ensuring a peaceful and credible election.
