Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri
A chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Umar Ardo, has faulted the reported defection of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as “deeply repugnant” and lacking ideological foundation.
In a statement released on Friday, Ardo condemned the alleged political realignment, insisting that it reflected what he called “a cynical culture of political opportunism” in the country’s democratic system.
According to him, the defection was driven by self-interest rather than a genuine commitment to public service.
“This move, devoid of ideological conviction or principles, exemplifies the cynical culture of political opportunism that continues to debase democratic norms in Nigeria,” Ardo stated.

He added that “defections undertaken for personal protection rather than public service insult the mandate freely given by the people and erode trust in democratic institutions.”
The SDP stalwart further accused the Fintiri administration of alleged financial mismanagement, claiming that residents of the state were aware of what he described as “serious financial misappropriations” during the governor’s tenure.
He noted that the governor is facing a pending five-count charge bordering on corruption, money laundering and fraud before the Federal High Court, Abuja.
“Already, the Governor faces a pending 5-counts charge of corruption, money laundering and fraud,” Ardo said.
“While the law must take its course and due process be respected, no change of party colours can either substitute accountability or save him from being prosecuted.”
He stressed that political realignment, in his view, could not be used as a tool to escape legal scrutiny.
“Neither can political realignment launder reputations nor extinguish legitimate scrutiny,” he declared, warning that alleged wrongdoing must be addressed through the appropriate judicial process.
Ardo also cautioned the people of Adamawa against being misled by political maneuvering, insisting that governance should be rooted in transparency and responsibility. “Governance is not a game of hide-and-seek behind party banners,” he said.
“Justice, transparency and responsibility remain non-negotiable, and no defection will place anyone above them. Fintiri must face the criminal charges against him, willy-nilly.”
The statement comes amid growing political realignments ahead of future electoral contests, with analysts observing that defections have become increasingly common in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Ardo, however, maintained that such moves should not be used to shield public office holders from accountability.
He urged relevant authorities to ensure that the rule of law prevails, stressing that “the people of Adamawa are not deceived” and remain committed to demanding justice, good governance and responsible leadership.
