By AUSTINE TSENZUGHUL, BAUCHI
A historic move, never seen before in Bauchi, Northeast Nigeria, that underscores inclusive governance and cultural preservation, has surfaced as Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has hammered out transformative moves, stepping up many traditional title holders to newly created positions.
The Doctrine of Necessity maestro, Bala Mohammed, has also upgraded emirate positions across Bauchi State.
This landmark initiative, which includes the creation of 13 new emirates and chiefdoms, goes beyond ceremonial gestures as it is a strategic reform aimed at decentralizing traditional authority and fostering grassroots development.
The strategic reforms, it is believed, will settle long-standing agitations for representation and recognition among autonomous communities.
One of the notable appointments is the upgrading of Alhaji Adamu Mohammed Duguri as the First-Class Emir of the newly created Duguri Emirate from Alkaleri Local Government Area.
Besides Duguri, other heartwarming appointments include:
Muhammad Kilishi Musa as the First Emir of Ari (Second-Class Status),
Ya’u Shehu Abubakar as the Second-Class Emir of Burra from Ningi, and
Ibrahim Samaila Boyi as the Second-Class Emir of Warji.
The appointments are made pursuant to the State Chieftaincy Appointment and Deposition Law, 2025, reflecting the administration’s dedication to legal due process and institutional integrity.
Governor Mohammed’s chieftaincy reforms have been widely hailed across the Northeast of Nigeria so far as a panacea for peace and unity—recognizing diverse communities and their traditional leadership. The reforms further strengthen social cohesion and reduce communal conflicts.
*Empowering Local Governance*: The decentralization of traditional authority enhances responsiveness to local needs and fosters participatory governance.
*Championing Development*: The newly appointed Emirs have pledged to support government initiatives in education, health, and security—key pillars of the governor’s development agenda.
This bold restructuring of the traditional institution is a testament to Governor Bala Mohammed’s visionary leadership—one that honors the past while building a more inclusive and prosperous future for all Bauchi citizens.
