Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai
The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), has taken former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, into custody shortly after he was granted bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday night.
El-Rufai, who had been in EFCC custody since Monday over alleged corruption-related offences, was reportedly released around 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
However, witnesses said he was immediately re-arrested by operatives of the ICPC at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Sources disclosed that the latest arrest is linked to allegations that the former governor unlawfully intercepted phone communications belonging to Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
It was gathered that earlier in the week, the ICPC had filed charges against El-Rufai under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws at the Federal High Court in Abuja over the alleged phone-tapping incident.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the ICPC nor El-Rufai’s legal team had issued an official statement on the development.
The case has continued to attract public attention amid growing concerns over accountability and the rule of law.
