Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has approved the appointment of 4,800 Special Assistants to expand government presence across the state’s 192 wards.
The governor announced the decision on Monday during a meeting with leaders and members of the APC from the 18 local government areas at the Government House in Benin City.
He said the initiative is aimed at taking governance closer to the people while strengthening the party’s grassroots structure.
“So we are taking the governance to the grassroots so that whatever is from the top will also go down to the bottom,” Okpebholo said.
The governor also reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and appreciated members for their support during the election victory.
“I want to say good morning to everybody and tell you that I love you all. I want to let you know that the party is our party. We don’t have any other party than APC,” he said, adding, “Approving 4,800 SAs is not an issue at all because we all work for this victory. The victory does not belong to Okpebholo alone.”
Edo APC Chairman Jarret Tenebe explained that the approval covers 25 Special Assistants for each of the state’s 192 wards.
According to him, “In his magnanimity, the governor has decided to approve 25 SAs in each of the wards in 192 wards across the state,” adding that the meeting was held to explain the selection process for beneficiaries.
Tenebe disclosed that the APC State Working Committee has set up a committee to work with ward leaders, ensure compliance with the guidelines and forward the names of qualified nominees to the party headquarters in Benin City.
The meeting, attended by Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, the Chief of Staff, APC officials and ward leaders, also highlighted plans to strengthen the party’s activities and improve coordination between the government and grassroots structures.
