Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo
Edo State Government has revealed plans to recruit an additional 3,000 teachers as part of its strategy to enhance teaching quality and learning outcomes in public schools across the state.
Governor Monday Okpebholo made the announcement on Wednesday in Benin City while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), led by its State Chairman, Comrade Bernard Ajobiewe.
Reaffirming his administration’s strong focus on education, the governor described it as the bedrock of development, pledging continued investment in both infrastructure and human capital within the sector.
> “Teachers remain a top priority in our development agenda,” Okpebholo stated. “We are building and renovating schools across Edo, and as infrastructure improves, so must manpower.”
He noted that in addition to the new recruitment drive, his administration had already taken steps to address long-standing challenges in the education workforce, including the regularization of over 5,000 Edo-Star teachers, who had worked as contract staff for more than three years under the previous government.
> “Our goal is to ensure that no school lacks qualified teachers and that every child must receive quality education in a conducive learning environment,” he added.
The governor commended teachers for their dedication and patriotism, recognizing their role in shaping the future of Edo State.
During the visit, the NUT conferred a Lifetime Achievement Award on Governor Okpebholo in recognition of his commitment to education reform and his administration’s efforts to reposition the sector.
The award presentation was jointly made by Comrade Bernard Ajobiewe and the Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo, Comrade Jormah Egwahide.
Both the NUT and NLC welcomed the announcement of the 3,000 new teaching positions, describing it as a timely move that would significantly boost the quality of public education across the state.
