Enugu State Police Command has successfully busted child trafficking syndicates, rescuing six children and arresting 10 suspects in a series of coordinated operations between June 30 and July 16.
The command’s spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Enugu.
SP Ndukwe said the operations led to the rescue of children who were victims of both local and transnational child trafficking. One of the rescued children, a 16-year-old girl, was sold for N900,000 in 2021, while a 12-year-old boy was sold for N1.4 million in 2024.
Ndukwe stated, “Two trafficked children were rescued: Loveth Mfonobong, 16, whose name had been changed to Ifunanya Chiaha and Benjamin Alex Okon, 12, renamed Udochukwu Chiaha.”
The police arrested several suspects, including a woman who trafficked a 14-year-old girl to Ghana and another woman who sold a newborn baby for N1.4 million.
He said the suspects have been arraigned and remanded in correctional custody.
Ndukwe emphasized the police’s commitment to combating child trafficking and ensuring justice for the victims.
