
New Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Tijani Fatai
Tijani Fatai has formally assumed office as the 42nd Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of the Lagos State Command, following his recent appointment by the Police authorities.
His assumption of duty was announced in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Ikeja, Abimbola Adebisi.
Fatai takes over from Olohundare Jimoh, who served as the 41st Commissioner of Police between February 18, 2025, and March 26, 2026.
Educational Background and Early Career
A native of Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State, Fatai attended Anwar-ul-Islam College, Agege, from 1979 to 1984. He later obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Ogun State University, now Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.
He joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on June 10, 1994, beginning what has spanned decades of policing and operational leadership across various parts of the country.
*Strategic Assignments Across Nigeria*
Before his latest posting to Lagos, Fatai served as Commissioner of Police, Eastern Port, Port Harcourt. Over the years, he has held several key operational and administrative roles.
His previous assignments include Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Department of Operations at the Maritime Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos, as well as at the Lagos State Command Headquarters, Ikeja.
He also served as Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Department of Finance and Administration at Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos.
In addition, Fatai has worked as Area Commander in Ilaro, Ogun State; Maiduguri Metro, Borno State; and Area C, Surulere, Lagos.
His operational experience also includes serving as Squadron Commander of 5 Police Mobile Force in Benin, Edo State, and 17 Police Mobile Force in Akure, Ondo State.
Fatai further served as Officer-in-Charge of the Homicide Section at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lagos, and as Divisional Police Officer in Ogere, Ogun State, as well as Ijanikin and Alakara divisions in Lagos State.
He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

According to the statement, his “track record of leadership, professionalism, and dedication to duty underscores his preparedness to steer the affairs of the Lagos State Police Command effectively.”
Upon assumption of office, the new Commissioner of Police reassured residents and stakeholders of his commitment to strengthening security architecture across the state.
He pledged to consolidate ongoing reforms, improve internal security, enhance inter-agency collaboration, and strengthen community policing initiatives.
Fatai also emphasized his determination to advance the police mandate of protecting lives and property in line with global best practices.
“The Lagos State Police Command therefore, solicits the continued support and cooperation of the public as the new leadership works to deepen professionalism, discipline, and service delivery,” the statement added.
