First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Friday, officially commissioned a newly built 100-bed Mother and Child Hospital in Gombe State — a healthcare project designed to improve maternal and child survival across the North-East region.
The state-of-the-art facility, named in her honour, was described by Mrs. Tinubu as “more than just a structure” but “a gateway to life, hope, and a healthier future for mothers and children.”
“This hospital is a symbol of care, compassion, and commitment to the well-being of women and children,” she said at the inauguration ceremony. “It aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises access to quality healthcare, particularly for the most vulnerable groups in our society.”
Mrs. Tinubu said the hospital is expected to play a critical role in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in Gombe and neighbouring states, providing families with much-needed access to essential medical services.
She expressed gratitude to Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya and his wife, Hajiya Asma’u Yahaya, for naming the hospital after her, and for their continued investment in healthcare infrastructure.
“I deeply appreciate this honour and commend the governor’s unwavering commitment to improving health services in the state,” she said.
The First Lady also acknowledged the efforts of Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), for spearheading the project and advancing Nigeria’s pursuit of the global development agenda.
In her remarks, Orelope-Adefulire said the facility reflects a joint commitment to deliver accessible, high-quality healthcare services to underserved populations.
“This hospital represents a vital step in Nigeria’s journey towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 — Good Health and Well-being,” she noted.
She revealed that the Gombe facility is part of a broader initiative involving multiple Mother and Child Hospitals constructed through partnerships between the Office of the SSA on SDGs and state governments.
“Our aim is to help reduce — and ultimately eliminate — maternal and infant mortality in Nigeria, and to ensure equitable, universal access to essential healthcare,” she added.
In a related development, Mrs. Tinubu also inaugurated the newly constructed Gombe State College of Nursing and Midwifery, a project initiated by the state government to strengthen the healthcare workforce and enhance maternal and neonatal care across the state.
