Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has revealed a notable 16.42% drop in fuel consumption for June 2025, with total fuel evacuation reaching 1.44 billion litres.
George Ene-Ita, NMDPRA’s Director of Public Affairs, clarified in a Wednesday report that the daily fuel consumption averaged 48 million litres, correcting earlier claims of 38.94 million litres.
“The total fuel evacuation for June stood at precisely 1,440,768,129 litres, a significant decline from May’s 1,768,812,804 litres,” Ene-Ita stated, highlighting a reduction of over 290 million litres.
The NMDPRA report detailed a daily average evacuation of 48,025,604 litres, calculated by dividing the monthly total by June’s 30 days. While Automobile Gas Oil (AGO), or diesel, saw a modest 1.73% supply increase to 432.18 million litres from 424.83 million litres in May, its distribution fell sharply by 23.23%, dropping to 424.06 million litres from 552.35 million litres.
Household Kerosene (HHK) supply and distribution both declined by 13%, with June figures at 7.79 million litres compared to nearly 9 million litres in May. The most significant drop was in automotive gasoline supply, which plummeted by nearly 48%, from 72.36 million litres in May to 37.66 million litres in June, with distribution also decreasing by 16.54%.
The report outlined state-by-state fuel truck-out volumes, with Lagos receiving the largest share at 205.66 million litres, followed by Ogun (88.69 million litres), the Federal Capital Territory (77.51 million litres), and Oyo (72.81 million litres).
The decline in fuel supply and distribution points to ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s midstream and downstream petroleum sectors, affecting national consumption trends. The NMDPRA vowed to collaborate with stakeholders to enhance distribution and ensure a steady supply of petroleum products nationwide, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
