Amnesty International Nigeria has crowned Halima Isa Ferobe of Abande Memorial School, as the winner of its 2025 Secondary School Debate Competition held on Thursday at the Indimi International Conference Center, University of Maiduguri, Borno State.
The annual debate, now in its second edition, is part of Amnesty International’s ongoing initiative to promote human rights education and critical thinking among young Nigerians aged 15 and above. This year’s event was moderated by lecturers from the University of Maiduguri and sponsored solely by Amnesty International.
According to the Programme Manager of Amnesty International Nigeria, Barbara Shittraan Magahi, the first edition of the debate took place in Delta State, South-South Nigeria.

She said the 2025 edition was held in Borno State to engage students in the North-East, a region deeply affected by conflict and educational challenges.
“Amnesty International operates in over 150 countries, advocating for human rights, education, health, and security. Through this debate, we aim to empower young minds to think critically, speak confidently, and champion human rights in their communities,” Magahi said.
Ten secondary schools were invited to participate, with six competing and four observing to prepare for subsequent editions. The competition featured lively debates and a “Human Rights in Action” quiz, engaging students in thought-provoking discussions about justice, equality, and civic responsibility.
After intense rounds, the winners emerged as follows:
🥇 Halima Isa Ferobe, Abande Memorial School, Maiduguri – ₦1 million scholarship (89.5 points)
