Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has again recorded a major feat on the global stage as its students received cash rewards at the 3rd edition of the Huawei Education Summit (THES26) held in Abuja for their outstanding performance at the 2025/2026 Huawei ICT Skills Competition Global Finals in China.
The students were honoured for representing Nigeria and the Huawei Southern Africa Region at the global competition held in Shenzhen, China, from June 2 to June 5, 2026, where they competed in the Network, Cloud, Computing and AI/Innovation tracks alongside 177 teams from 40 countries.
The global contest began in October 2025 with more than 220,000 students from across the world participating, making it one of the largest ICT skills competitions globally.
The presentation of cash rewards was the major highlight of the Huawei Education Summit held on Thursday, July 30, in Abuja, where a total of N16 million was shared among Nigerian students who excelled at the global finals.
ABU’s Yunusa Mohammed, who was part of Nigeria’s Computing Track team that finished second overall, received a share of the N2.5 million reward presented to the team.
Three ABU students—Abdulroqeeb Adekunle, Shefiu Wakili and Musa Yakubu—were among members of the two Nigerian Cloud Track teams that emerged champions and were rewarded with N3.5 million.
Another ABU student, Kumba-Bana Tekanyi, was part of Nigeria’s all-female Network Track team that won the grand prize and received N5 million in recognition of the outstanding achievement.
Similarly, TeamABU2026, comprising Ruqqayyah Labo, Khadija Khalid and Grace Olorunfemi, received N5 million after winning the AI/Innovation category with their innovative project, ParaVision, at the global finals.
The summit attracted key stakeholders in Nigeria’s education sector, including the leadership of the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), vice-chancellors, ICT directors and academics from universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
With the theme: ” _Accelerating Digital Education in Nigeria: Leveraging Emerging Technologies for Transformative Education,”_ the summit featured presentations on digital innovation in higher education.
Lead of the ABU Huawei Advanced ICT Academy Support Centre, Prof. M. B. Mu’azu, presented a paper titled: ” _Insights to IGR for Schools,”_ while Director of ABU IAIICT, Prof. E. A. Adedokun, delivered a presentation on ” _Case Sharing: ABU Smart Campus.”_
Also present at the summit were Dr. Bashir Sani, Technical Lead of the ABU Huawei Advanced ICT Academy Support Centre; Nasiru Lawal, ABU Network Refresh Project Manager and Huawei AIASC Instructor; and Maryam Ololade Jimoh.
