Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has extended his condolences to the Ejeh of Ibaji, His Royal Majesty John Egwemi, and the grieving people of Ibaji Local Government following a tragic boat accident that claimed over 20 lives on the River Niger.
Represented by Deputy Governor Joel Salifu during a solemn visit to the Ejeh’s palace on Wednesday, the governor described the incident as “heart-wrenching” and assured the community of the government’s unwavering support during this difficult time.
“Our hearts are heavy. We stand with Ibaji in mourning. The government will leave no stone unturned until every missing person is accounted for,” Salifu said on behalf of the governor.
The ill-fated boat, carrying numerous passengers, capsized on September 30, plunging the local community into mourning. While some survivors were rescued, several passengers remain unaccounted for.
In immediate response to the tragedy, the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (KOSEMA) and other relevant authorities have been deployed to carry out rescue operations and investigate the cause of the mishap.
“We want to assure you that Ibaji is not alone in this,” Ododo emphasized. “We are committed to doing everything within our power to bring relief to the affected families.”
Responding to the visit, HRM John Egwemi, who also serves as the Chairman of the Ibaji Area Traditional Council, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives.
“Tragedy often strikes without warning, but its impact can linger for a lifetime,” the monarch said. “This incident has shaken our entire community. We are grateful for the governor’s concern and immediate response.”
He confirmed that while many perished, several passengers were pulled from the water alive, and efforts are still ongoing to recover those missing.
Egwemi assured the delegation that the traditional council would continue to collaborate with the state government to monitor the situation and ensure timely updates.
