A federal lawmaker, Senator Oluremi Tinubu representing Lagos Central Senatorial District has called on Nigerians to shun all attempts to cause disunity and remain unflinching in spite of challenges bedeviling the country.

Senator Tinubu stated this on Thursday in a statement to commemorate Nigeria’s 61st Independence anniversary

She stressed the need for Nigerians to spend time on sober reflections, realising that “the things that bind us together are stronger than those which threaten to divide us”.

In her words: “Every year, we commemorate the Independence of our Nation. Beyond the festivities however, it is a culmination of our struggle for self-determination from imperialism and our resolve to self-rule”.

“Upon attainment of Independence, ‘hope’, ‘determination’, and ‘confidence about the future’ were resounding themes in the speech delivered by Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa”.

“Today’s celebration is a reminder of where we have come from, how far we have gone, the price that we paid for this freedom and all that binds us together as a Nation. It is a reminder to hold on to the hope for better days, and the determination to make Nigeria work”.

“There is no doubt however that we may have gone off course a few times, and in the words of Sir Tafawa Balewa, ‘ tested to the utmost’. What matters most is that we have found our way back and are on course to the realisation of the Nigeria of our dreams”.

“As we celebrate, we must make out time for sober reflections, realising that the things that bind us together are stronger than those which threaten to divide us. We must shun all attempts to cause disunity amongst us, and remain unflinching in spite of whatever challenges we may face”.

“Our Nationalists have fought and played their part. Now, the responsibility rests on us, to safeguard, preserve, cherish and build a Nation that future generations of Nigerians will be proud of”.

Senator Tinubu, noted that the Independence Day’s celebration is also another opportunity to appreciate Nigerian security operatives who have continue to defend the internal peace and sovereignty of our dear Country.

She, however, congratulated the good people of Lagos Central Senatorial District, Lagos State, and all Nigerians at home and the Diaspora on this 61st Anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence.
