Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ogun State has expressed confidence that security agencies will take appropriate action against individuals or groups involved in vote buying and other electoral malpractices.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Remo Federal Constituency was one of 16 constituencies across 12 states where by-elections took place.
Ogun’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Saseyi Feyijimi, addressed the issue on Saturday in Sagamu, responding to reports of alleged vote buying involving INEC officials and some political supporters. In an interview with journalists, she referenced a widely circulated video showing the arrest of officials and supporters with large sums of money, allegedly intended for rigging the Remo Federal Constituency by-election.
Feyijimi assured that security agencies are handling the situation effectively. “INEC is confident that the security agencies will take the necessary steps. Once I receive the official report, I will forward it to the National Headquarters,” she said.
The REC also praised voters in the constituency for their early turnout and orderly conduct during the election. She reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to maintaining impartiality and transparency throughout the process.
NAN reports that the by-election in Remo Federal Constituency was held to fill the vacancy left by the passing of Adewunmi Onanuga, former Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, who died on January 15 after a brief illness. (NAN)
