Former AGF Abubakar Malami
A judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Obiora Egwuatu, has recused himself from presiding over two cases filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.
Justice Egwuatu announced his decision on Thursday during court proceedings, shortly after one of the matters was called for mention.
One of the cases is a civil suit seeking the final forfeiture of 57 properties allegedly linked to Malami.
In his brief remarks, the judge explained that he was stepping aside for personal reasons and in the overall interest of justice, stressing that the move was necessary to ensure fairness and transparency in the handling of the matter.
The cases had only recently been reassigned to Justice Egwuatu by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho.
They were previously handled by Justice Emeka Nwite during the court’s Christmas vacation period.
Following the recusal, the matters are expected to be reassigned to another judge for further hearing and determination.
Court officials are yet to announce when the cases will resume before a new judge.
