UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, bringing months of political uncertainty to a dramatic end. Starmer, said he would remain in office until a new Labour leader is elected to ensure a smooth transition of power.
The decision follows growing pressure from within his party after Labour suffered major setbacks in local elections and faced increasing criticism over its policy direction.
In a statement outside Downing Street, Starmer said every decision he made in office was focused on “putting the country I love first.”
He also paid tribute to his wife, describing her as his “rock,” and said he now wants to be the “best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and joy.”
The resignation sets the stage for a Labour leadership contest, with Andy Burnham widely expected to emerge as a leading contender for the position.
