Arsenal had to dig deep to avoid a damaging defeat on Sunday, scraping a 1–1 draw against a spirited Chelsea side that played more than 50 minutes with 10 men at Stamford Bridge.
The London derby exploded into life midway through the first half when Moises Caicedo was shown a straight red card in the 38th minute for a rough challenge on Mikel Merino, a tackle that caught the Arsenal midfielder on the ankle and left the home crowd stunned.
Down a man but far from deflated, Chelsea came out after the break with renewed bite. Their persistence paid off just three minutes into the second half when Trevoh Chalobah rose highest to meet Reece James’ corner, powering a header past the Arsenal defence to hand the Blues a 1-0 lead.
Arsenal, however, refused to let the game slip away. The equaliser arrived in the 59th minute as Bukayo Saka delivered a trademark curling cross that found Merino perfectly placed at the far post. The midfielder nodded home from close range, hauling the Gunners back into the contest.
The draw means Arsenal stay firmly on top of the Premier League table, holding a five-point cushion over Manchester City—who secured victory against Newcastle on Saturday—and maintaining a six-point lead over Chelsea.
While Arsenal remain strong favourites to end their title drought stretching back to 2004, the fierce resistance Chelsea showed suggests they may prove a serious obstacle in the run-in.
The Gunners have now gone 17 matches unbeaten across all competitions, with 14 wins in that stretch. Chelsea, meanwhile, continue their steady resurgence, extending their own unbeaten streak to seven games.
