Nigerian Army has been recognised as Africa’s Best National Army in Counter Terrorism Operations for 2025 by African Security Watch, in recognition of its sustained operations against terrorism and insurgency across Nigeria.
The continental honour reflects the Army’s operational successes, strategic leadership and contribution to counter terrorism efforts, following years of intelligence led campaigns against terrorist and other violent criminal groups.
The award was formally presented to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Shaibu Waidi, on Wednesday at the Army Headquarters in Abuja by Major General Teriworie Gagariga, who had earlier received it on behalf of the Nigerian Army during the African Security Watch Awards Ceremony held in Banjul, The Gambia.
African Security Watch said the Nigerian Army earned the recognition for its coordinated joint operations, intelligence led campaigns, civil military cooperation, force development and capacity building, which have significantly weakened terrorist groups and strengthened security efforts in Nigeria and across the region.
Receiving the award, Lt Gen Waidi described the recognition as a tribute to the courage, professionalism and resilience of officers and soldiers serving in various operational theatres.
He said the honour reflects the commitment and sacrifices of troops who continue to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty despite difficult operational conditions.
The Army Chief dedicated the award to officers and soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, noting that their courage, as well as the support of their families, continues to inspire the Army’s resolve to keep the nation safe.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to sustaining its gains through intelligence led operations, stronger collaboration with other security agencies, continuous training, improved personnel welfare and the acquisition of modern military capabilities.
Lt Gen Shaibu added that the Army would remain focused on building a more professional, adaptive and combat ready force capable of responding to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges while contributing to regional peace and security.
The award recognises the Nigerian Army’s counter terrorism efforts and its role in supporting peace and security operations across Africa.
