Super Eagles of Nigeria
Nigeria’s dream of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an abrupt end after FIFA confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative for the inter-confederation play-offs.
The global football governing body released an official accreditation notice to journalists, listing the six teams that will compete for the final two World Cup spots: Bolivia, DR Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname. This announcement effectively closes the door on Nigeria’s participation.
The setback follows Nigeria’s controversial exit in the CAF play-offs last November, where the Super Eagles drew 1-1 with DR Congo before falling 4-2 in the penalty shootout. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had protested the result, claiming DR Congo fielded ineligible players, and appealed for the tie to be overturned.
FIFA, however, has dismissed any changes to the qualifying lineup, signaling that the original outcome stands and that Nigeria’s appeal has been unsuccessful.
The play-off tournament, scheduled ahead of the World Cup hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, will feature six nations vying for the last two tickets to football’s biggest stage. With DR Congo confirmed, Nigeria’s journey to the 2026 World Cup ends in disappointment.
