Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Federal Capital Territory chapter, has called on security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing the freedom of Dr. Chinonye Nwachukwu, a young medical doctor who was kidnapped over two weeks ago.
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, NMA-FCT Chairman, Dr. Emeka Ayogu, pleaded for urgent intervention, revealing that the doctor, who studied in Ukraine, was kidnapped on October 21 while heading to her duty post at Garki Hospital.
According to Ayogu, the kidnappers have already demanded ransom and warned the victim’s family against involving law enforcement.
“The family has not been permitted any form of communication with her, and her current state remains unknown,” he said.
He noted that the incident had been reported to multiple security outfits, including the Department of State Services (DSS) FCT Command, the FCT Police Command, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Expressing growing concern over the prolonged captivity, Ayogu urged security forces to “intensify their operations” and hinted that the association might consider further steps if no progress is made soon.
NMA-FCT Vice Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Nasiru, joined in the appeal, stressing the urgency of government intervention while calling for calm among anxious members of the medical community.
The association’s Treasurer, Dr. Uchenna Aniebue, described the abduction as deeply unsettling for doctors across the FCT and urged authorities not to relent until Nwachukwu is safely reunited with her family.
Similarly, Dr. Theophilus Agho, Chairman of the Nigeria Dental Association, FCT Chapter, pleaded directly with the abductors to release their victim.
“She returned home after studying abroad to serve her country. We appeal for her safe release,” Agho said, commending ongoing rescue efforts and encouraging security agencies to sustain the pressure.
In his remarks, NMA-FCT Assistant Secretary, Dr. AbdulHafeez Usman, reiterated the association’s confidence in the security apparatus, urging them to remain resolute in ensuring Dr. Nwachukwu’s safe return.
