Country Director of Global Peace Foundation Nigeria, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, has called on journalists across the country to embrace peaceful and responsible reporting as a vital tool for national transformation and unity.
Hayab made the call during an Iftar jointly organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, and the Global Peace Foundation in Kaduna, where media practitioners gathered to break the Ramadan fast in an atmosphere of reflection and solidarity.
Speaking at the event, the cleric described it as a privilege to share the moment of breaking fast with journalists during a period when both Ramadan and Lent emphasize patience, empathy and unity among people of different faiths.
He noted that the spiritual seasons serve as a reminder of the values needed not only in personal lives but also in professional responsibilities, especially for journalists who play a significant role in shaping society.
Hayab said journalists wield enormous influence through their writing and broadcasting, stressing that their words shape public opinion, highlight truths and hold leaders accountable.
According to him, in a country as diverse as Nigeria with multiple cultures, religions and aspirations the role of the media goes beyond reporting events to shaping perceptions and facilitating constructive dialogue.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s journey toward stability, development and unity requires a responsible media landscape that prioritises peace, accuracy and professionalism in its reporting.
Hayab urged journalists to uphold integrity in their work by avoiding sensationalism capable of inciting fear, tension or division within society.
He also encouraged media professionals to give voice to the voiceless by highlighting stories of resilience, cooperation and hope, while promoting dialogue across ethnic, religious and political divides.
The peace advocate stressed that the media remains an essential partner in building a culture of peace where differences are respected, common ground is sought and the national narrative reflects progress and promise.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Kaduna State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Abdulgafar Alabelewe, commended Hayab for consistently recognising the media as watchdogs of society and reaffirmed the commitment of journalists in the state to responsible reporting that promotes peace, accountability and national development.
