Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta has strongly condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for what it describes as an unauthorized and heavy-handed intrusion into its premises.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, disrupted a private event and allegedly violated the rights of attendees.
According to OOPL management, EFCC operatives stormed the Green Legacy Hotel, situated within the library’s complex, during a pool party, apprehending individuals suspected of internet fraud. The management, through Mr. Kayode Adeyemi, Special Adviser on Media to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, labeled the operation a “flagrant invasion” of private property and a violation of the rights of both the organization and its guests.
Adeyemi claimed that over 50 armed individuals, led by a person identified as “Olapade,” entered the premises without presenting a search warrant. “This Gestapo-like gang, claiming to be EFCC operatives, stormed our facility at about 2 a.m., firing shots and threatening to kill people,” Adeyemi stated. “The chaos caused by their actions led to panic and serious injuries as guests scrambled to safety.”
He further noted that the event had been publicly advertised days in advance, questioning the EFCC’s claim of acting on an intelligence tip. “Olapade informed our Managing Director, Mr. Vitalis Ortese, by phone that they were acting on intelligence about a private event, yet this was a well-publicized gathering,” Adeyemi added.
The OOPL management has demanded a formal explanation and an apology from the EFCC for the distress caused, including injuries sustained during the incident. They have vowed to escalate the matter to the EFCC leadership, the Nigeria Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS). “This action represents a clear violation of OOPL’s corporate rights and the personal rights of those present,” Adeyemi said. “We are pursuing investigations and will seek legal recourse and sanctions if these grievances are not addressed.”
The management warned that failure to provide accountability could lead to further action, emphasizing their commitment to protecting the rights of the institution and its guests.
