Prince Kanu
A Magistrate Court in Abuja on Tuesday adjourned for further hearing a case involving Ms. Uche David Obinali, a 49-year-old businesswoman and niece of former Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha. Ms David Obinali is accused of defrauding American-Nigerian philanthropist and politician, Prince Daniel Kanu, of N127 million.
According to court filings, Obinali allegedly obtained money from Kanu under false pretenses, including $20,000 and N10 million purportedly meant to repatriate her late brother’s remains from the United States to Nigeria for burial. Police investigations later revealed that her brother had already been buried in Texas, USA since March 2024, over a year before the alleged transaction took place.
The case originated from a petition filed by Kanu at the Garki Police Station on September 23, 2025. In his petition, he accused Obinali of not only fabricating the burial story but also fraudulently acquiring several assets from him, including a Mercedes Benz GLS 450, a Toyota Sienna bus, three shipping containers, and cash, all amounting to N127 million.

Uche Obinali (AKA Uche Edwin)
Obinali, who resides at No. 18 Lord Lugard Street in Asokoro, Abuja, was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6 on charges of criminal breach of trust and cheating, in violation of Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code Law.
The court granted her bail pending the continuation of the trial. She was however remanded at the Keffi correctional centre when she could not meet her bail conditions. Proceedings are scheduled to resume on November 11, 2025.
Prince Daniel Kanu, 54, is well known in Nigeria for his philanthropic and political activities. A dual citizen of Nigeria and the United States, Kanu is the founder of the Daniel Kanu Youth Foundation.
Kanu has maintained that the matter, which is before the trial Magistrate, Fatima Bukar, is strictly criminal and expects justice to be served in accordance with the law.
