Resident doctors in Osun State have officially joined the nationwide indefinite strike called by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
The strike, which started on Saturday, has led to a halt in medical services at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Osogbo.
President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in Osun, Dr. Phillip Ajibade, confirmed the decision to suspend medical duties, emphasizing that it was in line with the directive from NARD’s national leadership.
“The NARD president made it clear that all members are to go on an indefinite and comprehensive strike, and ARD UTH Osogbo is an affiliate of NARD. We are in full compliance,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to Ajibade, the issues raised by NARD, which include improved working conditions for resident doctors, are also pressing concerns for their colleagues in Osun. “What NARD is demanding from the Federal Government concerns us too as doctors,” he added.
The strike follows the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued by NARD to the federal government. National President Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, in a statement on Saturday, explained that the decision to go on strike was unavoidable due to the government’s failure to fulfill promises made during previous meetings, including demands for better working conditions for resident doctors across Nigeria.
This marks another critical phase in the ongoing battle for better healthcare working conditions in the country.
