Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has praised Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for openly criticising the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over what it described as anti-party activities and political interference.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working Committee, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party said Governor Nwifuru deserved commendation for speaking out against what it called Wike’s persistent involvement in political affairs outside his official responsibilities.
According to the PDP, the governor recently cautioned the FCT minister against escalating political tensions in Ebonyi State through what it described as political misinformation, the use of President Bola Tinubu’s name, and anti-party tactics.
The party stated that the governor’s remarks reflected what it called Wike’s long-standing pattern of political interference.
“We are certain that Governor Nwifuru is conscious of the ignoble role Wike, then as the Governor of Rivers State, played in pushing his predecessor out of the PDP,” the statement said.
The opposition party also recalled comments previously made by former Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, alleging that Wike’s most notable achievement was “the crude accumulation and conversion of public wealth”—an allegation the PDP claimed the FCT minister has not responded to.
Reaffirming its political position, the PDP insisted that it remains an opposition party and has no alliance with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We reiterate that the Peoples Democratic Party, as an opposition party, is not and cannot be in an alliance with the ruling party. We are a principled political party and will continue to insist on best practices in political contests in a bid to help achieve democratic consolidation in our country,” the statement read.
The party also clarified that its recognised candidate is Mr. Eze Alexander, stressing that he remains “the candidate of the authentic and uncompromised PDP” and is contesting as an opposition candidate.
The PDP further urged Nigerians to support Governor Nwifuru and other political leaders willing to challenge what it described as Wike’s attempts to destabilise states.
“We urge the public to join the Governor of Ebonyi State and any other governors who are bold enough in condemning a wicked attempt by Wike to ‘put fire’ in their states,” the statement added.
