By EZEKIEL OBI, Abuja –
The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Umar Damagum, has disowned the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, over his comments on the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Ologunagba had stated that the PDP was not obligated to write to INEC for its regular meetings, including the NEC meeting scheduled for June 30.
However, Damagum described Ologunagba’s comment as unauthorized and not representing the official position of the PDP.
“Let me clearly and unequivocally state that the comment by Ologunagba was made without the approval of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party,” he said.
Damagum emphasized that the party would address the concerns raised by INEC in a meeting with the commission’s Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu.
“In my capacity as the acting national chairman, I wish to make it categorically clear that the views expressed by Ologunagba in that press interaction were entirely his personal opinions and do not represent the official position of the PDP,” he added.
The PDP had invited INEC to its 100th NEC meeting, but the commission responded that the party’s letter was not in compliance with the requirements of the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022.
Ologunagba later clarified that his comments were made prematurely and without due consultation.
