Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has passionately implored the Nigerian Federal Government to launch an all-out offensive against the nation’s worsening insecurity, emphasizing that no country can thrive when its people are gripped by fear.
In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, Obi responded to harrowing reports of over 100 lives lost in violent attacks across Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, and Edo states over the weekend.
He highlighted the brutal killing of eight Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel, the abduction of a Chinese national in Edo, and the kidnapping of passengers along the Benin–Iyere–Oluku road as urgent signals of a national crisis.
“The massacre of five soldiers and 58 civilians in Borno is not just a tragedy—it’s a glaring sign that Nigeria is facing a severe security crisis,” Obi declared.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen, noting, “Their bravery underscores the sacrifices of those who risk everything for our safety.
The perpetrators must face swift justice, and their sacrifices must be honored.”
Obi stressed the alarming scale of violence, stating, “When over 100 Nigerians are killed in a single weekend, our losses mirror those of nations in active conflict.”
He urged the government to declare a national emergency on insecurity, mobilizing all resources and agencies to halt the descent into lawlessness.
“No nation can flourish under constant threat. History warns us—Somalia and Libya are stark reminders of what unchecked insecurity can do,” he cautioned.
Calling for decisive action, Obi advocated for a unified effort to restore safety, saying, “We must act with urgency to prevent Nigeria’s slide into chaos and rebuild a secure, thriving nation for all.”
