Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has declared its support for Mr. Peter Obi following his entry into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), pledging nationwide mobilisation and grassroots backing for his political engagement within the party.
The COPDEM National Chairman, Rwang Pam, made the declaration on Thursday while addressing newsmen at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Jos, alongside members of the coalition.
Pam said COPDEM has a nationwide membership strength of over five million Nigerians. He added that more than 20,000 members of the group have already registered as card-carrying members of the ADC, describing the development as a strategic boost to the party’s grassroots structure.
He said: “Mr. Peter Obi’s entrance into the ADC is not merely a political movement; it is a statement of conscience. It is a declaration that Nigeria can no longer afford politics without principle, leadership without sacrifice, or governance without compassion.
“COPDEM is hereby assuring you -Your Excellency- that you are not alone in ADC; the over 5 million members of COPDEM are already looking forward to this great event. These 5 million and growing remain your trusted allies in this journey.
“Also, the over 20,000 COPDEM members that have picked up ADC cards will walk with you through thick and thin of this adventure. We remain resolute in our candidacy through you and that the indefatigable human pillar of the New Nigeria that is Possible.”*
Pam further assured that COPDEM would deploy its structures across the country to support civic engagement, voter education, and the defence of democratic values in collaboration with the ADC.
He also called on Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to actively participate in democratic advocacy, urging citizens to join COPDEM and contribute to efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
The development comes amid growing political realignments within opposition parties, with analysts noting that organised civic coalitions like COPDEM could play a significant role in shaping future electoral outcomes.
