A mysterious explosion rocked Bodo Community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday, sparking concerns of sabotage.
The blast occurred near the starting point of the Bodo-Bonny road, targeting an onshore pipeline, according to eyewitnesses.
A local resident, who witnessed the incident, told newsmen that the explosion seemed to be an intentional act, rather than an accident. However, authorities have yet to comment on the incident or confirm the cause of the blast.
NATIONAL ACCORD reports that the explosion occurred against a backdrop of escalating political tensions in Rivers State, where Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu, are facing impeachment threats. This volatile situation has been further complicated by militant groups in the Niger Delta, who have vowed to attack pipelines in retaliation for the Supreme Court’s decision to withhold revenue allocations to Rivers.
The region has been on edge since the Supreme Court’s ruling, which has sparked widespread discontent among locals. Militant groups have been threatening to disrupt oil production and target pipelines, citing the federal government’s alleged interference in Rivers State’s affairs.
The impeachment plot against Governor Fubara has added fuel to the fire, with many seeing it as a politically motivated move. The situation remains tense, with security agencies on high alert and emergency response teams working to contain the damage from the explosion.
