Cross River State Police Command has announced plans to conduct an autopsy on the remains of 22-year-old Moses Mba, who was allegedly shot by a police officer stationed at the residence of Governor Bassey Otu.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar on Saturday, Police Commissioner Rashid Afegbua confirmed the autopsy, stating, “We need to determine the exact cause of death. While a shooting may have occurred, we must confirm if it was indeed a gunshot injury.”
He added that the results would be made public once available.
According to reports, Mba was shot in the leg on August 1 by a policeman at the governor’s residence.
The young man’s mother, Mrs. Victoria Mba, recounted the tragic incident, saying, “My son was beaten, shot, and abandoned right outside the governor’s residence.
A Red Cross official rushed him to the Naval Reference Hospital in Calabar, but he succumbed to his injuries on August 9.”
She explained that her son had visited the residence seeking an audience with the governor, claiming he had a divine message to deliver.
“All he wanted was to see the governor,” she said, demanding justice.
“No one has the right to take another person’s life. We want justice for our son.”
In response, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Erasmus Ekpang, clarified that the location where the incident occurred is not the governor’s current residence.
He also suggested that Mba was not mentally stable at the time of the incident.
The police have assured transparency as they await the autopsy results to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Mba’s death.
