Nigeria Police Force has announced the resumption of full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, citing growing security concerns and the urgent need to protect lives and property across the country.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who announced this in a statement issued on Monday, said the decision comes after a careful review of emerging crime trends, particularly the increasing use of vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass to perpetrate violent offences.
According to him, enforcement of the policy will resume nationwide on January 2, 2026, even as the legal process surrounding the matter remains before the courts.
The Force PRO clarified that there was never a court order restraining it from enforcing the law on tinted glass usage.
He however, said enforcement was previously suspended “in the spirit of responsibility, transparency, and public convenience” to give motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the permit registration process without undue pressure.
Recent developments, CSP Hundeyin noted, have made the suspension untenable.
He said security assessments reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities carried out using vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass.
He said the concealment provided by such vehicles has been exploited by individuals and organised criminal groups to evade identification and commit crimes including armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent acts.
In response, the Nigeria Police Force said it has found it “both necessary and urgent” to resume enforcement as a proactive step to safeguard communities and stem the misuse of tinted vehicles for criminal purposes.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be conducted professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in strict compliance with existing laws.
He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety, the rule of law and collaborative engagement with stakeholders to enhance national security.
The police also urged motorists who genuinely require tinted glass for medical or security reasons to apply for the appropriate permits through approved channels and ensure full compliance with legal requirements.
