Anambra State Police Command says it has thwarted a planned cult clash in Enugwu Ukwu, leading to the arrest of two suspects believed to be part of the plot.
In a statement on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said officers acted on timely intelligence pointing to a gathering of “a dangerous cult group” preparing for a violent showdown.
Ikenga explained that operatives of the Special Anti-Cult Squad stormed the area in the early hours of December 4 and quickly took two young men into custody.
“The operatives arrested Oluebube Ifediorah, 21, and Emmanuel Offorbuike, 25,” he said.
The suspects were picked up in Enugwu Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area, after police secured the location and disrupted the planned attack.
During the operation, officers recovered a locally-made double-barrel shotgun and two live cartridges. Ikenga said the weapon was found inside a red bag carried by Ifediorah, while the rest of the group fled as soon as they sighted the police.
He added that investigators are already working to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle the network behind the aborted cult gathering.
The move, he said, is part of ongoing efforts to “rid the state of cult-related violence and criminal activity.”
Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, called on residents to support the command with credible information that can help curb cultism and other crimes across the state.
