Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for the submission of memoranda and position papers on the proposed legislation to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The extension is aimed at giving individuals, institutions and organisations more time to prepare detailed submissions and contribute meaningfully to the development of the proposed National Policing Bill.
Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chairman of the Presidential Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, said in a statement on Thursday, that the additional time would allow stakeholders to make more considered and technically sound contributions to the process.
The Working Group said broad stakeholder participation remains central to the development of a policing framework capable of addressing Nigeria’s changing security challenges while promoting professionalism, accountability and respect for citizens’ rights.
The proposed legislation is expected to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for a more effective policing system in Nigeria.
According to the Working Group, stakeholders’ input is particularly important given the wide-ranging issues that the proposed reform seeks to address, including sustainable funding, command and control, recruitment and training, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency collaboration and accountability.
It also highlighted the need for safeguards against political interference and abuse, stressing that these issues require careful consideration before a final framework is produced.
The Working Group therefore urged legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security sector professionals, state governments, professional associations, academics, experts and members of the public to use the extended deadline to submit their views.
All memoranda and position papers must be submitted exclusively through the official National Policing Bill portal, nationalpolicingbill.com, on or before 5:00 p.m. WAT on August 21.
The Working Group said the consultation process is intended to produce a policing framework that is effective, accountable, financially sustainable and responsive to the security needs of communities across Nigeria.
At the end of its assignment, the Presidential Working Group is expected to submit a final, implementation-ready draft of the National Policing Bill for further legislative consideration.
The committee also thanked stakeholders who have already submitted their contributions and encouraged others interested in the reform process to take advantage of the extended deadline.
