Youths in Gwer West Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State took to the streets on Tuesday, protesting the killings of their peers, alleged to be members of the Benue State Protection Guards, by suspected herdsmen.
The protest turned violent, resulting in the destruction of the Gwer West LG Secretariat, the palace of the paramount ruler, and a hotel owned by Senator Titus Zam.
According to eyewitnesses, over 200 youths mobilized themselves to the local government secretariat, setting it ablaze before heading to the monarch’s palace, which was also torched. A hotel believed to be owned by Senator Titus Zam was also burnt down.
The protest was sparked by the recovery of the dead bodies of three youths from the area, who were allegedly killed by herdsmen. Victor Ormimi, who confirmed the incident, stated that the killings triggered the violence.
The Ter Nagi, Chief Daniel Abomtse, whose palace was razed, confirmed the incident, revealing that he was away seeking medical attention when the destruction occurred.
The monarch reported that three vehicles and motorcycles parked in the palace were destroyed by the protesting youths.
However the Special Adviser to the Governor on Internal Security, Joseph Har, while confirming the incident argued that the three youths killed were not members of the state protection guards.
The Benue State Police Command spokesperson, SP Sewuese Anene, also confirmed the incident and assured that the Police would ensure that peace was restored in the area.
