Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara
Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum (RIVELF) has called for unity, reconciliation, and a renewed commitment to good governance as Rivers State transitions from emergency rule to restored democratic leadership.
At a press conference in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Dr. Gabriel Toby, RIVELF’s acting Chairman and former Deputy Governor, hailed the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, and the state’s House of Assembly following President Bola Tinubu’s decision to end emergency rule.
“This moment offers Rivers people a chance to reset and rebuild,” Toby stated, emphasizing the need for peace and reflection.
Toby urged political leaders and stakeholders to set aside differences and foster trust.
“We must replace anger with understanding, suspicion with trust, and resentment with brotherhood,” he said, advocating for a collective focus on accountability and transparency to prioritize the welfare of Rivers’ citizens.
Highlighting challenges like unemployment, insecurity, and infrastructure decay, Toby called for unified action.
“Division weakens us; unity strengthens us,” he declared, encouraging citizens to support lawful governance and reject violence.
He envisioned this transition as “a fresh start rooted in good governance,” urging active participation in rebuilding the state.
Toby also praised President Tinubu for restoring constitutional governance, expressing optimism for lasting peace and prosperity in the oil-rich state.
The emergency rule, declared on March 18 due to political instability, was approved by the Senate under the amended 1999 Constitution, leading to the temporary suspension of the state governor and the appointment of an administrator.
